Abstract

Phasor measurement units (PMUs) applied in power system is due to their capability of improved control speed, state online estimation and system protection. This paper proposes a method of optimization for the optimal placement of PMUs to enhance complete observability of power system in different contingencies mode like single line outage and single PMU failure. Zero-injected buses (ZIB) which are transfer buses in the power system network, are considered to obtain the best performance. They have capability to reduce the number of required PMUs for full observation of the power system network. We have applied binary cuckoo search optimal algorithm as a method of evaluating PMUs placement. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified via 14, 30, 57 and 118-buses IEEE system using MATLAB software environment. Experimental results show that minimum number of required PMUs and maximum bus observations can be achieved by the proposed method
