This is a study on how social media affects identity construction, self-concept, sense of social belonging, self-expression, and cultural orientations of emergent societies. As digital communication platforms are growing in scale, social media is already an important arena where people build their personal and social identities. The research is specifically directed towards understanding the perception of self and sense of belonging to the social and cultural context in which contemporary internet users interact online. The design of the research was qualitative, which was supplemented with semi-structured interviews and data obtained from surveys of 25 respondents. Thematic analysis and inductive coding were used to capture consistent patterns and help to make sense of the participants' experiences. Results show that 84% of the participants use social media for more than two hours a day, which is a significant amount of time. Most of the participants reported that their main method of content consumption was to look around and observe online content, and not actively produce content. The top reasons for using social media were entertainment (76%), fashion interests (72%), language interests (68%), and values and cultural expression (56%). Thematic findings revealed that there were three prevalent patterns: curated identity construction, social comparison, and the power of culturally-determined social media algorithms. Participants often created online personae that were idealized versions of themselves while at the same time comparing their lives, looks, and successes to those of others. Moreover, algorithmic exposure to a variety of cultural material has helped develop hybrid social identities and shifting cultural perceptions. In conclusion, the study found that social media plays a significant role in the process of identity construction and cultural integration, affecting people's self-expression, social belonging, and understanding of contemporary culture in more and more connected societies today.
