Abstract

Environmental policies are of paramount importance in shaping urban development and advancing sustainability. As urban areas grow, it is increasingly important to examine the effects of these policies using data-driven models to optimise urban planning. With an emphasis on policies such as green space development, sustainable transportation schemes, and energy-efficient building codes, this paper develops a data-driven model to assess the impact of environmental policies on urban planning and development. The analysis combines information from other authors, including environmental policy, urban planning, and socio-economic data. The effects of such policies on key indicators of urban sustainability, such as air quality, energy use, and CO2 emissions, are predicted using machine learning algorithms and regression analysis. Scenario and sensitivity analyses are conducted to estimate the long-term outcomes of these policies. These findings indicate that these policies have greatly enhanced cities' sustainability. The development of green spaces led to a 12% decrease in PM 2.5 emissions, sustainable transportation policies resulted in a 25% cut in traffic emissions, and energy-efficient building codes led to a 15% decrease in energy consumption per capita. The significance of these findings was confirmed by statistical analysis, which yielded p-values of 0.03 and 0.01 for the green space and energy efficiency policies, respectively. The research concludes that, in urban planning, data-driven models are necessary to assess the effectiveness of urban environmental policies; therefore, there is a need to integrate green spaces, sustainable transport, and energy-efficient infrastructure into urban development strategies. It is hoped that policymakers will be able to employ these findings in the future to inform urban planning and sustainability initiatives.
