Abstract

This study analyzes the complex economic consequences arising from the adoption of remote work in the post-pandemic era. A mixed-methods strategy comprised of analyzing labor market data, commercial real estate activity, along with quantitative and qualitative surveys of employers and employees yielded insights into productivity, urban economy, employment shifting, and overall economic impacts. The outcomes reveal modest changes in productivity, considerable transformations in commercial real estate, and an increased inclination toward flexible employment opportunities. Although remote work provides relative cost savings and access to a wider pool of qualified candidates for firms, it creates problems for urban centers and requires policy modifications. The study highlighted a greater strategic planning focus needed to fully capitalize on the benefits of remote work while reducing its adverse economic impacts.
