Pharmacological Research and Innovation for Enhancing Drug Efficacy and Safety in Disease Management

Abstract

The development of new drugs and the improvement of drug efficacy and safety through pharmacological innovation have been instrumental in managing many diseases. Even so, many people (~30–40%) do not respond to conventional drugs with poor therapeutic outcomes because of adverse drug reactions, low bioavailability, development of drug resistance, and lack of treatment specificity. This research review analyses some of the most recent pharmacological innovations aimed at improving therapeutic efficiency while minimizing the safety risks associated with treatment for diseases such as cancer, infections, cardiovascular conditions, and diabetes. Descriptive-analytical, review-based research was carried out by collating and assessing research papers, clinical trial reports, and documents accessible on the PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and WHO databases, published between 2015 -2025. Of the over 120 relevant studies screened, 75 selected articles met the criteria for detailed review. They were systematically appraised in relation to innovative drug-delivery targeting systems, pharmacovigilance protocols, personalized treatment, and emerging drug-design principles. Results indicated that most innovative pharmacological approaches improved efficiency by 25–45% and reduced adverse drug reactions by 30% when used to treat chronic diseases. Innovative targeting drug delivery systems enhanced bioavailability by >50% compared to classical formulations used in the treatment of chronic diseases. In comparison, personalized approaches in oncology increased treatment response by 35% in patient care, and AI-aided drug discovery time was reduced by almost 60%. The article also concluded that innovative pharmacological interventions were effective in improving treatment and reducing the potential risks associated with therapy. It also concluded that continued implementation of a personalized approach to drug development, nanoformulations, and enhanced drug design techniques will be crucial for improving overall healthcare outcomes and future global disease management.
