Abstract

This paper analyzes the application of smart materials to the design and operation of mechanical systems. The research outlines the characteristics and uses of primary smart materials such as shape memory alloys (SMAs), piezoelectric materials, magnetorheological (MR) and electrorheological (ER) fluids, and electroactive polymers (EAPs). Focus is placed on adaptability, efficiency, and control regarding the integration of these materials into mechanical systems. The results of the analysis demonstrate that smart materials provide unparalleled value in many applications including: actuators and sensors, vibration damping, responsive mechanical systems energy harvesting, and more, resulting in the shift to more advanced and adaptive systems
